John Hancock Tower ERU
custom knock down / field erected energy recovery ahu
Dynamic Air and Cambridgeport Custom proudly delivered a custom 10,000 CFM Knock Down Energy Recovery Air Handling Unit (ERU) for Boston Properties at the iconic John Hancock Tower. This advanced ERU replaced an outdated unit, boosting energy efficiency with a state-of-the-art enthalpy wheel for optimal heat and moisture recovery.
Project Challenges & Solutions
- Tight Rigging Conditions: Limited space required precise sizing of the heat wheel, the largest component, to meet the engineer’s efficiency and airside pressure drop (APD) requirements. We modularized base sections, panels, and coils to navigate freight elevators and the rigging path seamlessly.
- Compact Space Design: Custom coil and plug panel layouts addressed spatial constraints. To enable future coil pulls, we split hot water (HW) and chilled water (CHW) coil banks into two wide, overlapped, and staggered configurations. Extra-large plug panels with access doors facilitated the angled extraction of a 78″ OD heat wheel in just 42″ of clearance. Detailed wheel and coil pull drawings from Cambridgeport Custom ensured feasibility.
- Optimized Performance: Careful component selection and internal layout minimized airside pressure drop and met fan brake horsepower (BHP) and motor horsepower (MHP) criteria, despite high velocities in confined spaces.
- Streamlined Installation: Cambridgeport Custom provided clear “erector set” instructions and palletized, shrink-wrapped equipment for a smooth installation process, ensuring efficiency for our contractor partners.
- Expert Field Support: Dynamic Air Service played a critical role, offering on-site supervision and conducting field leakage and deflection testing to validate the build’s success.
This project demanded precision, where every inch mattered. We thank our partners for trusting Dynamic Air to deliver a tailored, high-performance solution for the John Hancock Tower.
