Boston Public Schools is committed to improving indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The Mildred Avenue K–8 School recently upgraded its natatorium’s dehumidification system. The old unit was undersized and inefficient, struggling to control humidity and ensure comfort. It was replaced with a high-capacity, energy-efficient Seresco CWT (Compressor Wall Technology) system to enhance air quality and occupant comfort.

Project Challenges and Solutions

The new unit was installed in a second-floor mechanical room with limited access, posing significant challenges. The Seresco CWT was built in five modular sections for easier transport and assembly. To complete the installation:

• Exterior doors were disassembled for access.
• Sections were hoisted through a central atrium.
• Equipment was moved along a second-floor catwalk and into the mechanical room.
• The unit was assembled on-site in the confined space.

This process required close coordination among the mechanical contractor, rigging team, and school staff to ensure safety, minimize disruption, and protect the building.

Improved Airflow and Moisture Control

The old system failed to meet the natatorium’s air handling and moisture removal needs. The new Seresco CWT unit:

• Increases airflow for better circulation and comfort in the pool area.
• Boosts outdoor air intake to improve air quality and meet code requirements.
• Enhances moisture removal to address humidity issues and protect the building.

Energy Efficiency and Performance

The Seresco CWT system delivers superior energy efficiency despite higher airflow and dehumidification capacity. Its innovative design uses multiple compressors, reducing refrigerant needs by over 85%. This lowers operating costs and simplifies maintenance. The unit’s high-efficiency components and advanced controls consume less energy than competitors, supporting sustainability and long-term savings.
